American believers, then, need both clarity and humility about hell. Denying the reality of hell might suit modern tastes, but it doesn't stand up to the overwhelming weight of the Christian scriptures and historic tradition. But confidently asserting that bin Laden is now in hell also treats this fearsome, mysterious reality with far less sobriety than it warrants.
Emphasis mine, hee hee. Via Gawker, this is indeed amusing. On the other hand, though:
Treating fairy tales with sobriety: that's what makes USA Today the greatest newspaper in our planet's 6,000 year history.
Yeah, thank goodness it's just McPaper. It's not like prominent young intellectuals in serious news outlets would ever be given space to write about such... oh.

Oh for fuck's sake:
"Atheists have license to scoff at damnation, but to believe in God and not in hell is ultimately to disbelieve in the reality of human choices."
Take a goddamn logic course. Could we just agree that hell is just like "not Heaven" and like not being in the incrowd? Then it would be like real life-- only forever. And those of us in "hell" would experience such freedom and happiness as to make the Heavenly Host green with envy. Again, like real life.
"Sophomoric" would be a compliment. I wonder what George Will thinks about being on the same page as this dimwit. George would never quote rock lyrics. Ha ha, George; he's your peer!
(I laugh to avoid crying.)
Douhat's response (appropriate at that) would be merely to point at that...silly thing...on George "Apologist for Power"'s throat and chortle.
(I, too, can be sophomoric.)
